Jeju Gwanghae (제주광해) is a galchi restaurant on the coast road in Aewol, on the northwest side of Jeju. Galchi (갈치) is hairtail, a long silver fish that Jeju is known for. We went for lunch on our second day in Jeju, the day after our night at Dongmun Market. There was no wait, and we got the last window table. We ordered the Gwanghae modeum set, which comes with the fish both braised and grilled. I mostly ate the braised galchi, my wife mostly ate the grilled fish, and our two kids were very happy with the meal.
The Gwanghae modeum set
Modeum (모둠) means “assorted”. It is a set that puts several of the restaurant’s dishes on one table. The small size is listed for two to three people and cost 108,000 won. On the DiningCode listing, the small set is braised galchi, grilled mackerel, a seafood hot pot, soy-marinated crab and spicy marinated crab, plus a choice of grilled galchi or grilled abalone. On our table there was grilled galchi and also grilled abalone, along with fish that was easy to give to the kids. I found the set generous. I don’t know why we got both that day, so if you are counting on a particular item, ask what the set includes when you order. The large set (177,000 won, three to five people) has all of those plus both grilled galchi and grilled abalone and two seafood hot pots.
The menu says two bowls of rice come with the small set and four with the large set. For four of us we added two more at 1,000 won each, plus two drinks at 2,000 won each.
Braised galchi, my side of the table
Galchi jorim (갈치조림) is hairtail braised in a red, spicy sauce with radish. Ours came in a long pan, covered in chopped green onion and sesame seeds. This is what I mostly ate. The sauce was thick, a little sticky and sweet, and I liked it a lot. I finished with the sauce spooned over rice.
Grilled fish, my wife’s side
The grilled fish came on a separate board: long pieces of grilled galchi and a grilled mackerel. My wife mostly ate from this side. The galchi came with the bones already taken out, which made it easy to eat, for us and for the kids.
Crab and prawn
The set also had soy-marinated crab (ganjang gejang, 간장게장), spicy marinated crab (yangnyeom gejang, 양념게장) and a large prawn.
What our receipt says
Our receipt was printed at 1:28 p.m. for table 8. The set is printed as “광해모둠소(갈치)”, the small Gwanghae modeum. Below it are 공기밥 (extra rice) x 2 at 1,000 won and 음료 (drinks) x 2 at 2,000 won, for 114,000 won in total.

The braise sets come with grilled mackerel and both kinds of marinated crab, according to the listing. For a family, the small modeum was a way to get galchi both braised and grilled without ordering two sets.
Downstairs: Shop Jeju and the free drinks
The restaurant is on the second floor, and the first floor is a gift shop called Shop Jeju. According to the DiningCode listing, if you bring your Gwanghae receipt to Shop Jeju, you get two free drinks per table. There is also a wall of photos and autographs in the restaurant.
Getting there
Gwanghae is at 867 Aewolhaean-ro, the coast road in Aewol. The restaurant is on the second floor, and our window table looked out on the sea. DiningCode lists free parking.
