Sokcho Meoguri Hoetjip Review: Daepohang Snow Crab A Course

Sokcho Meoguri Hoetjip (속초머구리횟집) is a snow crab and raw fish restaurant at Daepohang, the small fishing harbor on the south side of Sokcho in Gangwon-do. We ate there as a family of four on a Friday night in February 2026, on a one-night trip to Sokcho, and had the A course: two snow crabs, a plate of sashimi, mulhoe and a run of side dishes, finished with spicy fish soup. With drinks and a few extras the bill was 322,000 won. It is not cheap, but it fed four of us well, and the crab was sweet and full of meat.

A crab dinner on a Sokcho night

We headed to Sokcho on a Friday as soon as the kids finished their afternoon classes, checked into Hotel The Blue Terra, and went straight out for snow crab. Daepohang is about a five-minute taxi ride from that hotel. The harbor has a street of raw fish restaurants, and we picked Meoguri Hoetjip partly because my wife and I had eaten there once before, about ten years ago, when she was pregnant with our second.

We walked in without a reservation. It was busy on a Friday evening, but there was no wait, and we were taken up to the second floor, where most of the tables were. The tables are four-seaters that the staff push together for bigger groups.

The tanks outside are labeled with the fish in them, including black sea bream (감성돔), red sea bream (참돔), rockfish (우럭), flounder (도다리) and marbled flounder (참가자미), and a sign on the tanks mentions parking for 100 cars.

The crab courses and prices

Meoguri sells single dishes, but the easiest way to eat snow crab here is one of the set courses. They differ mainly in how many crabs you get: daege (대게) is snow crab, and honge (홍게) is red snow crab, which is cheaper. These were the courses on the menu when we went:

CourseWhat is in itPrice (won)
Special set (스페셜 세트)3 snow crabs, Sokcho mulhoe, sashimi, seafood set, crab innards rice, spicy fish soup380,000
A course, family set (A코스 가족세트)2 snow crabs, Sokcho mulhoe, seafood set, sashimi, crab innards rice, spicy fish soup300,000
B course (B코스 추천세트)1 snow crab and 2 red snow crabs, sashimi, Sokcho mulhoe, seafood set, crab innards rice, spicy fish soup250,000
C course (C코스 인기세트)3 red snow crabs (one can be swapped for a snow crab), Sokcho mulhoe, seafood set, sashimi, crab innards rice, spicy fish soup200,000

We ordered the A course for the four of us. When my wife looked the restaurant up afterwards, its Naver booking page listed extras for booking through Naver: a 10 percent discount coupon, a free red crab or boiled octopus, and a free round-trip pickup. We did not use any of that, but it is worth checking before you go.

Side dishes first

The course starts with a spread of small dishes (called seukkidashi, 스끼다시, in Korean seafood restaurants): lettuce, potato rice cakes, macaroni salad, kimchi pancake, fried fish, shrimp, abalone and sea squirt. The fried shrimp had sold out, so they brought fried crab meat instead, and the kids ate that happily. The side dishes were fine for nibbling while we waited, but not the reason to come.

Our older child does not eat crab, so we ordered him a bowl of rice (1,000 won) and he ate it with the fish and the fried side dishes. My wife and I had soju with the side dishes, and I liked the mulhoe sauce enough to keep eating it as a drinking snack.

Sashimi

The A course comes with a full plate of sashimi, thinly sliced flatfish (광어) and yellowtail (방어). The flatfish was the better of the two: firm, clean and good with soju, and our younger child, who had just started eating raw fish, ate it too. The yellowtail was less fresh than the flatfish, and we did not enjoy it as much.

Two snow crabs

After the side dishes, the two steamed crabs arrived cleaned and cut, with the legs laid out in a circle around the shells, which were filled with the rich innards. The crabs were not large, but the legs were packed with meat, and one scrape of a leg gave a big piece. The meat was soft and sweet.

Watching our younger child put on gloves and work through the legs, I did wonder if we should have ordered the special course with three crabs.

Crab innards rice and spicy fish soup

Once we had eaten most of the crab, the crab innards rice (게장밥) came out, served in the crab shell: rice mixed with the innards, sesame oil and crumbled seaweed. It is salty and savory, and it is even better with leftover crab meat on top.

The last dish is maeuntang (매운탕), a spicy soup made with the fish frames from the sashimi, bean sprouts and green onion. It usually comes with the rice, but we asked for it at the end, and added a portion of ramyeon noodles for 2,000 won.

What we paid and what we thought

ItemQtyPrice (won)
A course (A코스)1300,000
Chamisul soju (참이슬)315,000
Cola (콜라)24,000
Bowl of rice (공기밥)11,000
Ramyeon noodles (라면사리)12,000
Total322,000

We paid just after 10 p.m. 300,000 won for a course feels like a lot, but it included two snow crabs, a full sashimi plate, mulhoe, the side dishes, the crab rice and the soup, and all four of us left full. Compared with ordering the crab and a small sashimi plate separately, the course made more sense for us. I am giving it 4.2 out of 5: the crab was the highlight, the flatfish was good, and the side dishes and yellowtail were only average.

Daepohang after dinner

Meoguri Hoetjip is on the raw fish street at Daepohang, at 89-2 Daepohanghuimang 1-gil. The harbor is lit up at night, with the buildings and the bridge reflected in the water. The next morning we had breakfast at Dalbit-e Goeun Sundaeguk, a sundae soup restaurant near our hotel.
