Galbi Saenggak Pocheon Idong (갈비생각 포천이동점) is a charcoal galbi restaurant in a large hanok-style building in Idong-myeon, Pocheon, Gyeonggi-do. We had lunch there as a family on Sunday, March 29, 2026, the day after a camping night, and ordered two kinds of Pocheon Idong galbi, rice and naengmyeon for 200,000 won. The building and the setting are the best part. The plain galbi was good, but the marinated galbi was too sweet for us adults, and overall the galbi was about average for the price.

Lunch after a night of camping
We had spent Saturday night at a campsite, and on the way home on Sunday we wanted a proper lunch. Pocheon is known for Idong galbi (이동갈비), beef ribs named after Idong-myeon in Pocheon, so we looked for a galbi restaurant there. My wife chose Galbi Saenggak because it looked different from the usual galbi houses: a big wooden building in traditional hanok style with a terrace and a view of the hills.

There is a large parking lot in front. A banner at the entrance says “Since 1997”. Just by the door there is a small pond with fish in it, and our kids spent a few minutes looking at the fish before we went in.

Inside: meals downstairs, galbi upstairs
Both floors of the building belong to the restaurant. The first floor is for meal dishes, and galbi customers are sent up to the second floor, which you can reach by elevator. There are also private rooms and group seating, so it works for family gatherings. The second floor has a wooden terrace along the side with a view over the road and the hills.

It was busy at Sunday lunchtime, and most tables upstairs were already taken when we arrived. One thing to know before you go: we were told that on weekends you grill the meat yourself, and that on weekdays the staff grill it for you.
There is also a café on one side of the site, and the restaurant receipt gets you a discount there.
The menu
The menu has two pages. The top page is hanwoo, Korean native beef, and the bottom page is the “Ilpum” galbi menu, which is imported US beef. Prices are per portion, with the weight and the price per 100 g printed under each dish. These are the prices on the menu in March 2026:
| Dish | Korean | Portion | Price (won) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hanwoo saeng-galbi (plain) | 한우 생갈비 | 220 g | 95,000 |
| Hanwoo Idong galbi (marinated) | 한우 이동갈비 | 280 g | 95,000 |
| Hanwoo anchang-sal (skirt) | 한우 안창살 | 120 g | 85,000 |
| Hanwoo yukhoe (beef tartare) | 한우 암소 육회 | 200 g | 35,000 |
| Pocheon Idong saeng-galbi (plain, US beef) | 포천이동생갈비 | 270 g | 49,000 |
| Pocheon Idong galbi (marinated, US beef) | 포천이동갈비 | 360 g | 47,000 |
| Boneless Pocheon Idong galbi (marinated, US beef) | 뼈없는 포천이동갈비 | 220 g | 45,000 |
| Ilpum marinated galbi (US beef) | 일품양념갈비 | 550 g | 68,000 |

Saeng-galbi (생갈비) means plain, unmarinated ribs, and Idong galbi here is the marinated version. We ordered two portions of the plain Pocheon Idong saeng-galbi for the adults and two portions of the boneless marinated galbi for the kids, who do not like picking meat off a bone.
Side dishes
With the galbi came a table of side dishes: dongchimi (cold radish water kimchi), salad, pickled onions, spicy squid salad, lotus root, fresh kimchi and marinated crab. All of them can be refilled. They were good overall and went well with the meat.

Plain galbi
One portion of saeng-galbi is one long rib, so our two portions came as two ribs, marbled and scored with knife cuts. We grilled them on the charcoal ourselves, turning them until both sides were browned.

This was the better of the two. It was juicy, the marbling kept it tender, and it tasted good on its own or with the fresh kimchi and pickled onion. We cut some into small pieces for the kids and put them on their rice, and our younger child ate a lot of it.

Boneless marinated galbi
Most Idong galbi comes on the bone, but here you can order a boneless version, which is easier to grill and easier for children to eat. The meat is scored and soaked in marinade, and it browned over the charcoal.

The marinade is very sweet. The kids loved it and said it was delicious, but for us adults it was too sweet, and we went back to the plain galbi.

Naengmyeon to finish
After the meat we ordered one small mul-naengmyeon (물냉면, cold buckwheat noodles in broth) to share. There is a small size for after a meat meal, but even the small bowl was a big portion. The broth was good, and we finished it.

What we thought
Galbi Saenggak is a place you go to for the building and the day out as much as for the food. The hanok rooms, the terrace view and the fish pond made it a pleasant family lunch, and the side dishes and naengmyeon were good. The galbi itself was average: the plain ribs were good, the marinated ones were too sweet for us, and 200,000 won for the four of us is not cheap. I am giving it 3.8 out of 5. If you go, order the plain saeng-galbi, and get the boneless marinated galbi only if you have kids who like sweet flavors.
